ANDLRC participates in the Martin County Reentry Simulation

September 11, 2025

On September 10, 2025, our reentry team joined Trillium’s Reentry Simulation in Martin County, an immersive event designed to highlight the real-life challenges justice-involved individuals face as they transition back into society.

The simulation placed participants into scenarios that mirrored the daily struggles of individuals reentering their communities—navigating housing, employment, transportation, child care, probation requirements, and the overwhelming maze of paperwork and appointments. Even within the safe environment of the exercise, the frustration and pressure were deeply felt, creating powerful moments of empathy and understanding.

KCS and ANDLRC’s Role

Koinonia Community Solutions’ A New Direction Local Reentry Council (ANDLRC) was honored to be a key part of the day.

  • Rubi Blancas, Reentry Coordinator, served as a guest speaker, sharing ANDLRC’s progress in serving 78 participants since January 15 and providing critical insight into how wraparound support can make a difference.

  • John Wallace, Case Manager, and Executive Director Watsi Sutton volunteered during the simulation, helping facilitate activities and guiding participants through the challenging exercises.

  • Community partners also stepped forward, including Agape Health Services’ Chief Behavioral Officer, Gwen Gilbert, and NC FIT Coordinator, Lester Howard.

  • Judge Regina Parker, an ANDLRC Executive Committee Member, lent her support and perspective, underscoring the importance of collaboration between the courts, service providers, and the community.

Why This Matters

Reentry is not just about leaving incarceration—it’s about rebuilding life with stability, dignity, and opportunity. The barriers faced by justice-involved individuals are often invisible to the wider community but include lack of affordable housing, limited employment options, transportation gaps, and stigma.

Events like the Martin County Reentry Simulation bring these realities to light, reminding us that second chances require more than good intentions—they require coordinated, compassionate, and practical support.

A Call to Action

KCS and ANDLRC remain committed to walking alongside justice-involved individuals every step of the way. From housing to job readiness, from childcare support to food access, our team is building bridges for those determined to create a new future.
